| Our Current Work Programme |
Every year the Solent Forum Steering Group agree the annual work programme for the Solent Forum Officers. The work we undertake is often dependent upon both staff time and financial resources. There are currently 1.6 full-time equivalent Solent Forum officers who share the project workload. From time to time we also take on student placements who assist us with specific deliverables from time to time.
Our work programme consists of core services and project work.
Core Services include Solent Forum meetings; Subgroup meetings; Solent News; Solent Forum Website; State of the Solent Reports; DISC: Metadatabase of Research and Reports; Secretariat services to Solent European Marine Sites Management Scheme (SEMS) and regular Coastal Management Conferences.
| Project Work 2007-2008 | |
| Around the Solent | The overarching project aim is to foster stewardship of the Solent region, by encouraging people to care for their environment through greater awareness and understanding of the value of their surroundings. A scoping study was undertaken with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. We are now preparing a larger HLF bid for implementation which we intend to submit at the end of August. If the bid is successful we expect to begin implementation in September 2008. |
| Cultural Heritage Event | The next Solent Conference 'Making the Most of Heritage Assets' will concentrate on our local cultural heritage. It will take place on 6 September 2007. It aims are threefold: to explain new management regimes and highlight coastal practitioners responsibilities; to raise awareness of the value of the maritime heritage/culture and; to explore the issues and difficulties in managing our heritage. This conference will coincide with Heritage Open Days and will include a public open lecture on maritime archaeology on the evening of the second day. |
| DISC | DISC is the metadatabase of the Solent Forum. It signposts the user to research and studies that have been undertaken in the Solent area. During 2007 we will look to develop Service Level Agreements with data generators and make the webpage more user friendly. Follow the link to the left for direct access to DISC. |
| Indicators for the Solent | The aim of this project is to establish a robust set of environmental, social and economic indicators, which can be widely understood by the public, as a basis for monitoring of the future "health" of the Solent. The set of indicators were selected in 2004, the data is gathered annually and reviewed by the Solent Forum Research Group every three years. The first selection can be found in the Second Edition of State of the Solent. The first review will be undertaken during the summer months and a report prepared for dissemination in the autumn. |
| Maintenance Dredging Seminar | A half day seminar is being planned to look at the maintenance dredging protocol currently in development and the beneficial use of dredged material in association with SCOPAC. This event will take place once the protocol has been released. |
| Marine Habitats Sheets | After the successful publication of the Solent Habitat Information Pack (SHIP) containing coastal habitat information we are now working on the production of marine habitat sheets and accompanying indicative map. |
| Solent Recreation Subgroup Development | A Solent Recreation Workshop took place in 2006. Its purpose was to consider what research needs are most pressing to sustainably manage recreation in the Solent. Outcomes will be progressed during 2007/8 to determine the need for a recreation subgroup. |
| Wader Roost Strategy | The project will help inform the long-term availability of secure high-water feeding and roosting sites for Waders in the Solent, taking into account the likely changes due to sea level rise and coastal management. |
