- In an emergency dial '999' or us VHF Channel 16 and ask for the Coastguard. Alternatively, depress the RED distress button on your DSC Controller;
- Check the tide times and weather forecasts, particularly if you are going out on the water;
- Be safe, don't put yourself or others at risk. Be aware of the dangers from rising tides, soft mud, cliff edges and strong currents;
- Read and heed notices and be aware of by laws, zoning schemes and speed restrictions. Sailors should have the correct maritime charts and know how to use them. Walkers should have the appropriate OS Explorer map;
- Make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing for your chosen activity and have the correct equipment and that it is well maintained. If using a motorised craft make sure you have adequate fuel;
- If you see any suspicious objects such as drums or canisters washed up on a beach, don't touch them and inform the lifeguards, beach wardens or Coastguard immediately;
- Dispose of all your litter in provided bins where appropriate or otherwise take it home with you;
- Keep your distance from wildlife and pets under control;
- Avoid blocking access points or public rights of way;
- Before entering the water check the latest bathing water quality results;
- Stay on footpaths, keep dogs under control and leave gates as you find them. Do not pick plants;
- Tell someone where you are going and your expected arrival time home.
