4.	Terms of reference	The Department is a multi-disciplinary institution combining biological, chemical, geological and physical expertise in oceanographic science. In addition, the Department has achieved national standards of excellence for teaching and training students in marine science. Researchers and academics collaborate with industry and government, providing both fundamental and applied commissioned research. Marine research projects range from inputs to international global programmes, European and national programmes and more local coastal management processes.
