3. Type of organisation One of 17 Regional Coastal Groups covering the coastline of England and Wales comprising Local Authorities and other bodies with statutory responsibilities for coastal defence and related matters.
4. Terms of reference To act as a Forum for the exchange of information between constituent authorities covering historical facts, current situations and future proposals about:
  • The Shoreline
  • The Coastal Zone
  • The monitoring and effects of dredging on the coastline.
  • Sedimentation within the SCOPAC area and the interaction of any consequential coast protection activities.
  • Large scale Coast Protection Schemes including Beach Replenishment and their likely ecological and environmental effects.
  • Experiences gained from existing schemes.
  • To promote research into any of the matters set out in 1. above by Central Government, Universities and other appropriate bodies and to ensure the proper dissemination of any information obtained.
  • To act in an encouraging, guiding and co-ordinating role for the authorities who are undertaking the preparation of Coastal Zone Management Plans and related strategies in line with Government guidelines.
  • To seek to be regarded as specialising in the shoreline aspect of coastal zone management whilst recognising the need for its integration with the many other related interests.
  • The work of the Standing Conference shall be complementary to and not replace or reduce statutory responsibilities of each local authority in respect of coast protection matters.
