3. Type of organisation Limited Company and Registered Charity, established in 1991 following a joint initiative by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Councils.
4. Terms of reference
  • To promote the archaeological study of the Solent and Wight areas as a maritime community.
  • To promote a greater public awareness of the underwater cultural heritage.
  • To promote Solent-based projects as part of a national and international framework for archaeological and environmental research.
  • To promote a higher degree of archaeological awareness and competence amongst amateur sports divers.
5. Membership Forty six individual elected members.

Eight corporate members:-

National Maritime Museum; Associated British Ports, Southampton; the Crown Estate; the Royal Naval Museum; the Queen’s Harbourmaster Portsmouth; Friends of Lymington Museum; the Nautical Archaeology Society; Department of Geography, University of Portsmouth.
